An Overview of the Island Coffee “Region”

Island Coffee “region” is a catch-all category that includes Kona in Hawaii, Papua New Guinea, Hispaniola, Cuba and Jamaica primarily. These are found in smaller island environments ringing the world between the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn where the ocean dominates the climate. The dominant Bourbon cultivar and the famous Jamaica Blue Mountain variety (an offspring of the Bourbon cultivar) under these conditions produce a supremely mild, delicate floral-toned cup, low in acid, with a light but silky body and a long, satisfying finish. These coffees are very sweet and many are generally best at a lighter roast level. HOWEVER, some of these Island coffees may surprise you and want to go dark while still maintaining the distinctive low acid, mild profile. We will mention that in our listings.
